To treat a cavity, your dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then “fill” the area on the tooth where the decay was. Fillings are also used to repair cracked, broken or injured teeth and teeth that have been worn down from nail-biting, tooth grinding or other misuse.
Teeth can be filled with white porcelain, silver amalgam or a white glass material called composite resin fillings. Your dentist’s recommendation helps determine the type of filling that will best address your needs. General considerations include the extent and location of the decay, the cost of the filling material, and your insurance coverage.
To maintain your fillings you should follow good oral hygiene practices and visit your dentist regularly for cleanings. Additionally, make sure to brush with a toothpaste containing fluoride, and floss at least once daily.
If your dentist suspects that a filling might be cracked, he or she will take x-rays to assess the situation. If your tooth is extremely sensitive, you feel a sharp edge, you notice a crack in the filling, or a piece of the filling is missing, call your dentist for an appointment.
At Magnolia Family Dentistry, we offer several options of affordably priced fillings. Our quality fillings help you prevent more serious dental health issues and painful dental emergencies down the road.

I have high anxiety when going to the dentist. I needed a root canal and was referred by my dentist to Dr. Gallagher. On the day of my appointment my nerves were very high. I voiced my concerns to the dental assistant who brought me back and I’m sure she shared my concerns with Dr. Gallagher. He was so nice, listened to me and explained the procedure. He assured me that it would be ok and that I wouldn’t feel any more uncomfortable than I would with a filling. They got me settled, and kept making sure I was ok throughout the process. The procedure went fine and I would definitely recommend Dr. Gallagher.
First off, I must mention everyone at Magnolia is very friendly and welcoming! I am not a fan of going to the dentist so I was a nervous wreck. Michelle, also my daughter was my hygienist. Even though I am her mom she treated me just like anyone else. She explained everything she was doing all along the way! Very professional! So sweet! But we found a cavity which I wasn't happy about and was afraid to go back for the filling. I must say Nicole, the assistant was so sweet and calming to me. She is very upbeat singing songs on the radio. I never felt this relaxed in that chair. Dr. John Manelly made sure all long the procedure that I was doing ok. He knew how anxious I was! The filling was done in no time! He asked me."so...how was that?" And my response was "Awesome"! I am not afraid to go back next time! Love this office!! Becky Gunger Would recommend to everyone!!
I had a filling done and needed numbing. First time ever that I didn't feel the needle at all. Great people and terrific service. Would highly recommend.
Had a filling fall out that was installed during COVID by another dentist. Called Magnolia and was seen right away. I could tell the difference in the the procedure and the amount of time spent to correct the open gap left by the missing filling. Dr. Mannly is a real pro as well as his staff. Very helpful, clean and organized place to go for dental care.
